We left home at 8.00 am on Sunday 4th September 2011. On motorway to Valencia and following Tom Tom we went round outskirts of Madrid drove until 1.00 when we stopped on the road A5E90 to Talavera when we had done 500 kms.
We arrived at Guadalupe at 4.00 pm having done 694 kms and stayed at Hospederia de Real Monasterio. It was a lovely place and full of character. We walked around town and visited Monastery, and later in the evening heard Mass in the Monastery Church with a choir, which was an amazing experience. We ate in the hotel.
Photos of Guadalupe on 4th September
and 5th
On Monday morning, the 5th we left Guadalupe at 10.45 on road to Trujillo which was 78 kms away. On the way, we visited Berzocana and had coffee and looked at the 14th Century church which a man offered to open up for us.
We bought wines in Canamero and had drinks and tapas on road through Herguijuela, and arrived in Trujillo (cumulative distance of 800km) at 2.00
We stayed at the Hotel San Miguel, which was the least expensive hotel on our trip. There turned out to be the reason for this – our room backed onto the garden which was a mess, but the staff were very nice. However, the breakfast was disappointing
We walked around the town and had an evening meal in Plaza Major at Corral Rey, and saw a Children’s Entertainment in the Squire
Tuesday morning after breakfast at our Hotel San Miguel we visited the Information centre and went on a tour of Trujillo visiting all the important churches etc. Had drinks again in the Square
At 2.00 pm we left for Caceres. We walked around the old part of Caceres but were a little disappointed – no churches open Had a terrible lunch in the Plaza Major
Then we drove to Caceres golf club (Norba Club de Golf) and had a drink and then on to Merida, the capital of Extremadura and walked around town and visited Roman Amphitheatre
After our evening drinks, we drove back to Trujillo and Tony watched football in a local bar!
On Wednesday, the 7th, we left the hotel after breakfast and drove back to Norba Club de Golf and played 18 holes. Had a drink at the clubhouse then back to Trujillo
We had an evening meal in a restaurant near Hotel Orillas (worth trying rather than our hotel) by the castle and pre-drinks watching the world go by. Later in the evening had drinks in the Plaza Major
On Thursday after breakfast at the hotel we travelled to Cuacos de Yuste, then on to Talayuela Golf course, and at 11.30 visited Jarandilla de la Vera and then the Monasterio San Jeronimo.
We had lunch in Garganta de Olla and arrived at our hotel Hotel La Casona Valfrio at 3.00 and had a rest, a swim and then a super meal. It is a lovely country house amongst trees and fields
On Friday, after a super breakfast, we left for Talayuela golf at 8.30 am and arrived at 9.10 and played 18 holes, then had lunch at the clubhouse. At 2.15 we returned to the hotel for another swim and rest then off to the Parador Jarandilla for drinks. Returned to the hotel for another super evening meal in the courtyard
Photos from the Thursday and Friday
On Saturday the 10th we left the hotel at 10.20 after another super breakfast. Cumulatively we had now travelled 1,411 kms.
Arriving in Plasencia we parked in the centre by the Parador and walked around the town.
Then we took the N110 over the mountains to Hervas
and had a drink in the town and left at 3.00 taking the motorway back to Plasencia then arrived at the hotel at 4.20 for another swim and rest before dinner – again another super meal.
On Sunday, the 11th, we left the hotel after breakfast at 10.30 (1,615 km) and via Tom Tom round Madrid (nearer than the previous drive!!) and arrived home at 5.00 having done a total of 2,297 kms.
In the file are road maps and brochures of Extremadura, town maps of Trujillo and Merida and brochures of the two golf courses we played at.
