Having agreed to spend New Year away, we decided to go south, to where one of Tony’s relatives was shot fighting the French near Cadiz nearly two hundred years ago, so booked four nights at Hotel Casa Grande in Jerez de la Frontera which is as it suggests near the frontier with Portugal.
Jerez is yet another beautiful Spanish city as shown in this video and is in the province of Cadiz.
And very old and interesting with an informative tourist web site
We found Cadiz less interesting, but perhaps because we spent little time there. Wikipedia of course describes it well, and they say Cadiz is regarded by many as the oldest continuously inhabited city in Western Europe, with archaeological remains dating to 3100 years, and was founded by the Phoenicians.
A video in Spanish gives you an idea of the city
Battle of Barrosa
James Bussicott, Tony’s relative, was shot in the shoulder on 8th March 1811 when fighting with the 28th Foot Regiment against the French at the Battle of Barrosa near Cadiz. So we went and found the site of this battle and took some photos of the Tower and the beach where this battle took place.
There is masses of stuff on the internet which give lots of detail about the actual battle and even a video
You can see the tower below on the battle web site
We visited the Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian Art Foundation
And here a great video and also our photos
Including storks
Maps of Jerez and our hotel bill is in the file.
